impactAlert: MD Proposes Extending Family and Medical Leave Insurance Launch to 2027

The Maryland Department of Labor last Friday proposed delaying the implementation of the state’s Family and Medical Leave Insurance (FAMLI) program to provide employers and workers additional preparation time.

Under the new proposed plan, payroll deductions would commence on January 1, 2027, with benefits becoming available on January 1, 2028.

In preparation for the program’s launch, the Maryland Department of Labor is collaborating with state legislative leaders to extend the implementation dates, a move that is expected to be made in the coming weeks.

In parallel to these actions, the department says it’s developing a digital platform designed for accessibility, efficiency and accuracy for employers. The platform aims to build secure financial systems and increase awareness among employers and workers statewide about FAMLI.

The FAMLI program, once fully active, will offer Maryland workers up to 12 weeks of paid leave, providing up to $1,000 per week, to care for family members or address personal serious health conditions.
